Ehrhold, Axel; Blanchet, Aline; Hamon, Dominique.
Ifremer launched and coordinated the development of a strategy for the REBENT network (REseau BENThique) in 2000 to monitor the aftermath of the "Erika" oil spill in December 1999. Its aim is to provide consistent baseline knowledge about coastal benthic habitats and constitute a monitoring tool to detect changes at various scales over time and space. Sector-based seabed habitat mapping in shallow water (< 50 m deep), is currently being conducted throughout Brittany's coastal waters through a combination of geoacoustic marine systems and ground-truthing using biological grab sampling and seabed observations. Sedimentological and biological results on Glenan area emphasize a great diversity of subtidal habitats and marine species recognized. Sidescan...

ArchiMer
Hamon, Dominique; Blanchard, Michel.
The aim of this report is to provide an original method of mapping slipper limpet beds in the bay of Saint-Brieuc (Western Channel) by means of side scan sonar and submarine video. An evaluation of the biomass completes the distribution of limpets. The total fresh weight is about 250 000 tons

Pluquet, Fabrice.
This work aimed at displaying and studying morphological and sedimentological features of Corsican seafloor from the coast to depths of -100m. It also aimed at a better knowledge of sediment dynamics under hydrodynamic conditions, and at a reconstitution of the late Quaternary shorelines evolution. Careful analysis of the bathymetry has revealed a very contrasted morphology between the different areas of Corsican shelves, as it has been displayed on an synthetic geomorphological map. In addition, an homogeneous and overall map of surficial sediments of the Corsican shelves seabed was established and two areas, the Balagne and Agriates' platforms to the North of Corsica, and the Bonifacio Straits to the South, were mapped into details. The various...

Mapping of Posidonia oceanica beds around Elba Island (western Mediterranean) with integration of direct and indirect methods ArchiMer
Piazzi, L; Acunto, S; Cinelli, F.
Direct and indirect methods were used for mapping Posidonia oceanica beds around Elba Island. Side scan sonar and a visual infra red scanner were used to detect the extension of beds. Also, direct observations were adopted to assess the bed density and to calibrate the indirect methods. Samples of P. oceanica were collected and phenological variables and macroalgal epiphytes were studied to assess the health of the beds. P. oceanica around Elba Island covered an area of 3 680 ha. The largest beds occupied the four main gulfs of the island, characterized by gentle slopes and sandy bottoms. There, the beds showed uniform cover while a patchy structure was common on the rocky and steep bottoms of the western and south-eastern coasts of the island. P. oceanica...

Ehrhold, Axel; Guillou, Sylvain; Auffret, J; Garlan, T; Nguyen, K.
A study of the sediment bedload in the Mont-Saint-Michel bay is presented here. It combines the use of a 2DH numerical model and a pattern of sediment bedload transport established on the analysis of the statements of sidescan imagery combined with a dense groundwork of sedimentary grab samples. Results show the role of tidal currents asymetry in the realistic bioclastic sand transfert from the subtidal environment to the coast and the divergence of sedimentary dynamic between the maritime bay to the West and the tidal delta to the East. This in-shore transfer is responsable of the Holocene prism construction. The model reproduces tidal sedimentary dynamics with the immediate surroundings of the Mont-Saint-Michel. It shows the interest of the modeling of...

Pylar - Reconnaissance biomorphosédimentaire des fonds marins au large de Dieppe - Le Tréport (Seine Maritime ; France) ArchiMer
Dreves, Luc; Clabaut, Philippe; Tetard, Alain; Augris, Claude; Chevalier, Claire.
